Right now I am...
The elemental warm-up prompt
I always keep this essential prompt in my back pocket, whether for teaching or in my own writing practice. So simple it’s always relevant…and offers myriad benefits.
When to use it
Basic warm up
Anxiety grounding
Break through writer’s block
The prompt:
Set a timer for 5-10 minutes.
At the top of your page write Right now I am and just keep going, stream of consciousness.
Keep your pen moving nonstop until the timer buzzes.
Example:
Right now I am sniffling a bit as I type this, knowing I’ll have to finish up quick and blow my nose. The chair under me rolls back and forth with impatience, the tick-tock of my body in space while my mind focuses anywhere but the clock. Not wondering how long it’s been, just feeling my fingers move over the keys and watching the words stream across the blank white page…
