Not everyone has niblings, and that’s okay. But for those of us who do…it’s important to stay in touch with what’s going on, how they’re growing and developing.
Just recently I had a good conversation about my niblings, with a close friend who lives far away—who got niblings shortly after I did. His case is a little different though; he had his first kid before he had niblings…so now he gets to see how his kids do with them, which is a whole adventure in itself!
It’s wild to realize I’ve had niblings for 7+ years now. It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without them…family facetimes would definitely be less chaotic and giggly. And I suppose I’d have a lot less occasion to remember my childhood, without witnessing it reflected before me in living color.
Crazy how time flies though: seems like just yesterday my niblings appeared as tiny little wrinkly reddish things…and now they’ve grown beyond all expectations, running rampant over my heart and leaving an indelible mark on my soul.
Okay so what are niblings?
Niblings: Any children of your siblings—i.e. nieces, nephews, and non-gendered kiddos who call you uncle or aunt or whatever.
Anyway, I talked to my nephew and niece just the other day, and they’re doing splendidly. The 4 y/o acts like she’s ready to turn 6, with the fiery energy of some redheaded ball-lightning skipping through the atmosphere—definitely born to ride dragons.
And my 7 y/o nephew recently engineered a clever contraption for opening and closing the blinds in his bedroom, from anywhere in the room:
Having found inspiration (I’m proud to say) in my old childhood bedroom at Noonah’s house—where he noticed the pulley system of string & screweyes I rigged up long ago in my adolescence, to turn the lights on and off from my bed.
If necessity is the mother of invention…the father is often creative laziness.
Anyway, that’s my niblings in a nutshell. Have your niblings done anything interesting & inspiring lately? Share it below!
